Sporting remembers the contribution of Fernando Gomes in the European season

Sporting, the last club that represented Fernando Gomes as a footballer, today expressed its regret over the death of the 66-year-old former player, victim of a prolonged illness.

In a note published on their official website, the lions also remember the striker’s arrival at the club, in 1989, and the last two seasons of his career, 1989/90 and 1990/91, with an important role in European competitions .


“For Sporting, the former striker played 79 games and scored 38 goals, having contributed decisively to the Verdiblanco team’s excellent European campaign up to the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1990/1991,” recalls the Lisbon club.

In this period, the ‘leões’ reached the best-finishes in the European competition, eliminated by Inter Milão (a 0-0 draw at home and a 2-0 defeat), with Gomes scoring five goals on the European road, with the presence in all the games.

“To the family and friends, Sporting CP extends its deepest condolences, at the same time that it praises and thanks the years of dedication and delivery to the club”, added the ‘lions’.

Former Portuguese international striker Fernando Gomes, winner of two Golden Boots and top scorer in the history of FC Porto, has died today at the age of 66, due to a prolonged illness.
