Dozens of supporters riot in the center of Brussels

Dozens of people caused riots this Sunday in the center of Brussels, forcing the police to intervene, after the World Cup soccer match in Qatar in which Morocco beat Belgium.

The incidents, which injured a journalist, began midway through the second half of the game, when 150 youths set a container on fire, set off firecrackers and then damaged parked vehicles, according to Belgian public television RTBF.

The images broadcast by the local media showed several supporters destroying a car, some with the Moroccan flag, and burning scooters.

The police deployed a hundred agents in the center of the Belgian capital, using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters.

Several metro stations and streets were closed to traffic.

Brussels Mayor Philip Close condemned the incidents on Twitter and urged supporters to avoid the city center.

The riots were limited to the center of Brussels, since in other areas of the city, where an important Moroccan community lives, the celebration of the 2-0 victory of the Moroccan soccer team against Belgium has passed without incident.
