Senegal secured qualification for the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday. The Africans defeated Ecuador 2-1 in a match full of emotions.
Ismaïla Sarr, converting a penalty kick, opened the scoring in the 44th minute. In the second half, however, the South Americans pressed on in search of a draw that would put them back in the qualifying zone, after reaching through Moisés Caicedo in the 67th minute.
The Ecuadorian celebration didn’t last long though, as in the 70th minute, Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly took advantage of an error by the opposing defense to give victory to Senegal, who reached the round of 16 for the second time in their history and will look for the best participation ever: the quarter-finals in 2002.
