Costa Rica defeated Japan 1-0 on Sunday to level the back of Group E.
In a game with a first half without much history (zero shots on target on both sides), the draw (the 13th at half time of this World Cup), the emotion was reserved for the second half.
The Japanese Hidemasa Morita, player of Sporting, made his debut in the World Cup and quickly started to win the title. He made the first shot of the game right after opening the second half. Japan were always more dominant, but in the 81st minute, Keysher Fuller scored Costa Rica’s first – and so far only – shot in the World Cup to make it 1–0. The Costa Rican right back scored his third goal for ticos, scoring for the first time in a final stage of a national team competition.
Already in stoppage time, Kamada had a chance to equalize the game, but Keylor Navas defended twice, in a confusing move in the Costa Rican penalty area, with the result lasting until the end of the game.
With this victory – the first after eight games without a win in a World Cup – Costa Rica thus added the first three points to the group, equal to Spain (minus one game) and Japan, and relegated Germany to last place.
