Pele remains hospitalized due to a respiratory infection

Ex-Brazilian footballer Pelé is being treated for a “respiratory tract infection”, announced yesterday at the hospital in São Paulo where the three-time world football champion has been admitted.

Pelé, aged 82, was admitted to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo for a reassessment of colon cancer treatment, but ended up contracting a respiratory infection, “treated with antibiotics”, explains the medical team, adding that his general condition improves.

“The answer [de Pelé] was adequate and the patient is stable, with an overall improvement in his health. He will remain in hospital for the next few days to continue his treatment,” the hospital said.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, was diagnosed with cancer in September 2021. After surgery, Pelé underwent chemotherapy sessions, which required him to return to the hospital on a regular basis.

On the former player’s Instagram account, the “king” said on Thursday it was a routine “monthly visit” and thanked everyone who has supported him and best wishes.

Pelé’s health has deteriorated sharply, with back and knee problems limiting mobility, in addition to kidney crises.
