Swiss coach warns: ‘We have already proven that we can beat Portugal’

Coach Murat Yakin on Monday expressed his desire to see Switzerland dominate against Portugal in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, recalling that the Swiss have already shown they can beat the Portuguese.

“We are aware that it will be a game against a team that is well aligned. The statistics are not important, not even the past, but we have already proven that we can beat them. We want to progress in the tournament”, the coach began to look ahead to the game with the corner team during the press conference.

Before the confrontation with Portugal, the Swiss coach made it clear that he has no “specific plan” to stop Cristiano Ronaldo and hopes his squad will be “dominant” at Lusail Stadium.

“This team has already made great progress, we can be the dominant team. My players have the experience to judge on the pitch [os momentos do jogo], we can adapt to what the game demands. We already lost 4-0, we already won 1-0 [ambos na Liga das Nações] and we can face this great selection. We look forward to taking advantage of the opportunities we have.”

The goal of the Swiss is to reach the quarter-finals and write Swiss history, said 48-year-old Yakin. “We are all ready. The squad is complete and the injured players have recovered. We are really looking forward to the match, it is a great opportunity to go down in Swiss history. We want to give our fans another chance. game [nos quartos de final]he wished.

If the tie persists at the end of regular time and extra time, the Swiss’s coach assured that the team is ready to decide everything through the penalty spot. “We have trained the penalty kicks, but we have not only focused on that. The team will be prepared for that if necessary,” he concluded.

Portugal will take on Switzerland in the round of 16 of the World Cup, in a match scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 PM local time (7:00 PM in Lisbon), in Lusail, and will be coached by Mexican César Ramos.
