Diogo Ribeiro wins second gold medal at World Junior Swimming Championships

Portuguese Diogo Ribeiro won the second gold medal this Friday at the World Junior Swimming Championships, in Lima, Peru. The swimmer was surprised by the mark in the final, which led him to the second gold medal in the competition.

After the gold medal in the 100-meter mariposa, the young Portuguese also won the final of the 50-meter freestyle, with a score of 21.92, ahead of Cypriot Nicolas Antoniou (22.51) and Croatian Gere Hribar (22. 55).

“I didn’t expect to finish around 21 seconds. It’s unbelievable,” said the young Portuguese swimmer shortly after finishing the race, still recovering from the effort in the final.

The figure of 21.92 seconds is the new national record for juniors, very close to the absolute maximum in Portugal (21.90), which has been held by his Benfica team-mate Miguel Nascimento since July 30.

Shortly before that, the Portuguese swimmer secured his presence in a new final, the 50-meter mariposa, by setting the third fastest time in the semi-final (23.94).
