Biden highlights “Pele’s rise from humble beginnings to glory”

US President Joe Biden expressed his feelings to Pele’s family and all those who loved him on Thursday in a text posted on his page on the Facebook social network.

“For a sport that unites the world more than any other, Pelé’s rise from humble beginnings to soccer glory is a story of what is possible,” Biden said.

“Today, Jill’s thoughts [a sua esposa] and mine are with his family and everyone who loved him,” he added.

Pelé, born on October 23, 1940 in the city of Três Corações, in Minas Gerais, was the only three-time world champion soccer player, in 1958, 1962 and 1970, scored 77 goals in 92 games with the Brazilian team and played for the Brazilian club Santos and by the New York Cosmos, from the United States.

He was also Minister of Sport in the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, between 1995 and 1998, and was chosen as Sportsman of the Century by the International Olympic Committee (1999) and Footballer of the Century by FIFA (2000).
