Dino Baggio calls for research into substances used in Italy in the 1990s

Former Italian international footballer Dino Baggio has called for an investigation into “pharmacological substances” he administered during his active spell following the recent deaths of former teammates Gianluca Vialli and Sinisa Mihajlovic.

This is evident from an interview published on Wednesday in the Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello SportBaggio, whose career lasted from 1990 to 2005 and who played 60 matches for the Italian national team, wondered whether the substances administered at the time could have harmful effects on the health of athletes in the long term.

“Imagine doctors gave us doping drugs”noted Baggio, aged 51, who played for Juventus, Parma and Lazio, among others, without disclosing whether he brought banned products and later diverted his argument from the topic of doping.

Baggio would like “science to provide answers regarding drugs administered to recover from injuries or to improve the physical level”, requesting an investigation “on the pharmacological substances used at the time”.

The former footballer admitted that “there was always doping”, but left a guarantee: “We never took weird things, but you have to see if certain supplements were good.”

Dino Baggio later explained that his desire to see the substances ingested during the time he was a footballer was examined, refusing the idea that they were doping: “This reasoning of mine stems from the pain I carry about the disappearance of Vialli, who I always considered a friend and who helped me so much, of Mihajlovic and other guys who played football like me in the 90s. is to investigate the pharmacological substances ingested during that time. Maybe they have nothing to do with the dead or something will be discovered.”

Former Italy international Gianluca Vialli died on January 6, aged 58, due to pancreatic cancer, while former Serbia international Sinisa Mihajlovic died on December 16, 2022, aged 53, after battling leukemia for several years.
