Lopetegui reveals that Guedes was unhappy and wanted to leave Wolverhampton

Coach Julen Lopetegui revealed today that Portuguese international footballer Gonçalo Guedes was unhappy at Wolverhampton, so the best option was to return to Benfica on loan until the end of the season.

“He wanted to leave and we wish him all the best. He is a very good player and I think he will be happier there.” [em Lisboa]. We wish you all the best”said the Spanish coach at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against English champions Manchester City for the 21st round of the English league.

The former FC Porto coach added that he cannot have players in the squad who are “not happy”, as was the case with Guedes.

On Thursday night, Gonçalo Guedes was announced as a Benfica signing on loan from English side Wolverhampton until the end of the season.

The Portugal international moved to the England squad at the start of this season after five seasons at Valencia, and has appeared in 18 games for the ‘wolves’, scoring two goals and an assist.

Struggling to assert himself in the team now coached by Julen Lopetegui, who replaced Bruno Lage in technical management, Gonçalo Guedes returns to Benfica, the club where he trained and made it to the main squad, and from where he left in January 2017 switched to the French from Paris Saint-Germain, for 30 million euros.

At the start of the 2017/18 season, Guedes was loaned by the Parisian club to Valencia, who eventually kept the player on a permanent basis until his departure to English football.

The striker, who was not among the picks for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has 32 caps in the main Portugal national team, with seven goals, including the goal in the 2019 Nations League final against the Netherlands, which won the the trophy.
