Karen Khachanov secures place in semifinals

Tennis player Karen Khachanov, number 20 in the world, qualified for the semifinals of the Australian Open early on Tuesday after Sebastian Korda, 31st in the ATP ranking, left the meeting with a wrist injury.

The Russian defeated the American 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 3-0.

Khachanov, who also reached the semifinals at the last US Open, will face the number four in the world, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, or the 71st on the ATP ranking, the Czech Jiri Lehecka, on Friday.

In the women’s tournament, tennis player Elena Rybakina, number 25 in the world and champion at Wimbledon last year, qualified for the semifinals by beating Jelena Ostapenko, 17th in the WTA ranking.

23-year-old Rybakina defeated the Latvian 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted less than an hour and a half.

The Kazakh now competes against the number three in the world, the North American Jessica Pegula, or the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 24th in the WTA ranking.
