Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates) tested positive for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, but will continue at the Vuelta a España, his team announced on Friday.
“According to internal protocols, Ayuso tested positive for covid-19 this morning. He is asymptomatic and when analyzing his PCR sample it was concluded that he had a very low risk of infection, similar to other cases like we saw at Tour de France this year a statement reads.
The team states that the decision to keep Ayuso on the road was taken together with the race doctors and the officials of the International Cycling Union.
Ayuso is fifth in the general classification, 4.53 minutes from the leader, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl). João Almeida is the best placed Portuguese, in eighth place, 7.18 minutes from the top.
