Two-time Premier League champions Manchester City will face an independent league committee for numerous breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, the body announced on Monday.
The Premier League has forwarded the alleged irregularities to an independent commission, which included failure to provide mandatory detailed financial information, such as the compensation of players and members of the technical team led by Spaniard Pep Guardiola, in addition to failing to comply with the rules of fair game financial.
If the violation of these rules is proven, Manchester City will lose points in the championship.
This type of committee works independently of the Premier League and the clubs that are part of it. Members are appointed by the Independent Chairman of the Premier League’s Judicial Panel and all proceedings are private and confidential.
The period under review covers the 2009/10 to 2017/18 seasons, the first nine seasons spent by Manchester City under the ownership of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, during which the citizens won three Premier League titles, in 2012, 2014 and 2018.
Manchester City, number two in the English league for the 2022/23 season behind Arsenal, has one of the most valuable teams in the world and has three Portuguese international footballers under contract: João Cancelo, on loan to Bayern Munich in January, Rúben Dias and Bernard Silva.
In February 2020, the club was provisionally suspended by UEFA from European competitions for a period of two years for breaches of financial fair-play rules, but the sanction was overturned following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in July of that year.
