“On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I would like to convey to all the Turkish and Syrian people, nations friendly to Portugal and our National Team, our deep sorrow and dismay at the tragedy that occurred this morning and which claimed so many innocent lives. “, says the president of the organization in a statement.
Recognizing that “no word can alleviate the pain and impotence of all those who directly suffered the effects of this catastrophe”, Fernando Gomes is preparing “to make the FPF available to help in any way possible”.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred at 4:17 a.m. (1:17 a.m. in Lisbon), 33 kilometers from the provincial capital of Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey, on the border with Syria, originating at a depth of 17, 9 kilometers.
The quake at dawn, which was followed by several aftershocks, caused more than 1,300 deaths in both countries.
