The Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X) became the first leader of the 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve by bicycle on Wednesday, winning the first stage, which linked Portimão with Lagos, in the sprint.
At the end of the 200.2 kilometers of the route, Kristoff won in 4:49.25 hours, at the same time as the Belgian Jordi Meeus (Bora-hansgrohe) and the Norwegian Soren Warenskjold (Uno-X), second and third, respectively.
Overall, thanks to bonuses, Kristoff has a four second lead over Meeus and six over Warenskjold. The second stage will take place on Thursday, with the cyclists having to cover 186.3 kilometers, between Sagres and Alto da Fóia, in Mochique, the finish line coinciding with a first-class mountain count.
