The elections for the governing bodies of the Portuguese Judo Federation (FPJ), scheduled for Sunday, have been canceled by the Loures court, a federation source confirmed this Saturday to the Lusa bureau, following information from the B-list.
In a statement, the list led by José Mário Cachada, who is running against the deposed current A-list president, Jorge Fernandes, said the election was called off “on Friday” at 10:31 p.m.
List B also emphasized that, “without prejudice to the relevant internal disclosure of this information”, the board of directors of the FPJ General Assembly “so far” the candidacy led by José Mário Cachada, who is called “Judo – Nova Alternativa”, has not registered.
The FPJ Vice President Sérgio Pina was contacted by the Lusa agency and confirmed the information released by the B-list, but added that “only the candidates were informed of the decision”, without being able to state the reasons which led the court to decide to annul the Sunday election meeting.
“Friday there was a notice from the court that the summons for the election meeting was canceled, but the reasons will probably not be known until next week. What happened on the part of the court was simply the concern for the law election that was called,” explains Sérgio Pina.
According to the newspaper Público, the decision comes after the B-list filed a precaution against the admission of Jorge Fernandes’ candidacy.
Earlier this month, on February 4, José Mário Cachada’s list presented to FPJ General Assembly President Carlos Andrade “a complaint against the admission of List A”, alleging “insurmountable irregularities” in the list by Jorge Fernandes.
The elections for the Portuguese Judo Federation were scheduled for Sunday, the date found after the December 18 General Assembly in which Jorge Fernandes was dismissed, following a process by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), due to incompatibilities under Article 51 of the legal regime of sports federations.
At stake, according to the investigation, was the recruitment in 2021 to the FPJ of Jorge Alberto Fernandes, son of the deposed president, and the fact that the former head of the federation plays coaching roles at the Judo Clube de Coimbra, two incompatible scenarios with the functions it fulfilled.
