Spanish court rejects appeal to release Dani Alves

A Spanish court on Tuesday rejected the bail request of Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves, arrested for alleged rape, pending an investigation, considering that there is a risk of flight.

As reported by the Associated Press, the court held that there was a risk that Dani Alves would flee, so he must remain detained while the investigation is carried out.

A judge had ordered his preventive detention after initial investigations by the authorities.

In statements sent to EFE, Dani Alves’ lawyer, Cristóbal Martell, today described the court’s decision as “asymmetrical” and assured that the Brazilian international “continues to be as innocent” as at the beginning of the process.

In addition, the lawyer rejected that there was a risk of flight if the player was released on bail, stressing that Alves “never had the intention of leaving Spain and avoiding the process” that is being processed in the Spanish justice system.

The Brazilian international was arrested on January 20, after denouncing the police, being investigated for alleged sexual assault in December.

The player was summoned to appear at the Les Corts police station in Barcelona, ​​​​after an investigation into the alleged crime of sexual assault, the complaint for which was filed on January 2.

At first, Alves denied knowing the alleged victim, but after resorting to surveillance videos, it became clear that the Brazilian lied, a situation that led to his arrest.

The alleged events occurred on the night of December 30 to 31 and the complaint was filed on January 2.

On February 1, the player’s lawyers reported that he was available to hand over his passport to Spanish authorities and also use a tracking device in order to walk free.

According to lawyers for the Brazil international, who appealed to a Barcelona court for the 39-year-old’s release, he was also available to appear in court and before the authorities as many times as necessary, even daily.

Alves’ lawyers also argued that his detention without bail is not justified, since there is insufficient evidence regarding the alleged rape of a woman in a Barcelona nightclub.

Dani Alves, who was at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, had a successful career at FC Barcelona, ​​having also represented Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, among others, in a career full of successes, which made him the player with the most titles. in the world, with 42 trophies.

The Brazilian international, who is married to a Spanish woman, was on vacation in Barcelona after the 2022 World Cup, which was played in Qatar.
