Slander of FC Porto coach. Seixas da Costa loses appeal

Francisco Seixas da Costa is appealing to the European Court of Human Rights against the conviction for aggravated defamation, for crimes against the FC Porto football coach, after he lost his appeal to the Porto Court of Appeal this Friday.

The will to appeal in the last instance was confirmed to Lusa this Friday by Seixas da Costa’s lawyerManuel Magalhães e Silva, after the former diplomat lost his appeal to the Court of Appeal, which upheld the conviction and dismissed the appeal.

In September 2022, the former ruler was sentenced to pay a fine of 2,200 euros and civil damages of 6,000 euros for serious defamation of Sérgio Conceição. It concerns a publication on Twitter, in March 2019, in which the former Secretary of State for European Affairs Sérgio Conceição had called a “javardo”.

In September, the Public Prosecution Service had already asked for the conviction of Seixas da Costa, considering that it should be guaranteed “an essential minimum protection of the right to honour”emphasizing that the use of the phrase “javardo” has been proven.

Sérgio Conceição’s lawyer, Pedro Henriques, then revealed that the FC Porto coach was “satisfied” with the result and emphasized the sense of justice, in addition to the intention to donate the amount of the fee to a social institution in the city of Porto .
