The Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo qualified this Thursday for the triple jump final of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, in Istanbul, Turkey, with 17.48 meters, a new national record, in the first attempt.
The Olympic, world and European outdoor champion already had the best mark of the year among those registered (17.12), in a race in which Tiago Luís Pereira also participates, who entered the competition with the eighth best record of 2022 (16.48). ), still below his personal best (16.65).
Pichardo, 29, improved the national indoor record by two centimeters, which was 17.46 meters and had earned him a silver medal at the 2022 World Cup in Belgrade, a year after being proclaimed indoor European champion in Torun 2021, reissuing, at the time, the achievements of Nelson Évora, champion in Prague 2015 and Belgrade 2017 – it is, together with the 1,500 meters, with Rui Silva’s ‘tri’, the specialty with the most Portuguese titles.
The triple jump final of the 37th edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships is scheduled for Friday, starting at 8:35 p.m. local time (5:35 p.m. in Lisbon).
