The Dutch Public Prosecution Service on Friday demanded a two-year prison sentence for international footballer Quincy Promes, a current player of Spartak Moscow, who is accused of stabbing a cousin in a dispute in 2020.
The Dutch player was initially charged with attempted murder, but the prosecution, based on several testimonies, decided to drop these charges, given the lack of evidence that the aim was to kill the attacker.
The 31-year-old assailant is on trial for serious assault with a knife on a relative, a cousin of his, who was stabbed in the knee after an argument that took place at a family gathering in Abcoude, the Netherlands, in July 2020.
‘Based on the police investigation, the Public Prosecution Service suspects serious assault’, the prosecution said in a statement, given the opening of the trial, as long as the footballer remains in Russia, where he plays. The prosecution also said that the reason for the attack is not clear, but that it could be the theft of jewelry from an aunt.
Quincy Promes, a 31-year-old striker and 50-time Dutch international, was playing for Ajax at the time of the events. In his career, the player represented Twente, Go Ahead Eagles, Sevilla, Ajax and Spartak Moscow.
