Auriol Dongmo retains European shot put title. With Dongmo’s gold, Portugal secured its second medal in Istanbul and added 28 medals in indoor Europeans, 17 of which were gold.
The Portuguese won the competition in the final of the European Athletics Indoor Championships by throwing 19.76 meters … the best world record of the year, leaving the silver medal more than a meter behind.
Dongmo, 32 years old, started the match with 19.63m, followed by 18.68m until he made it to 19.76m, earning him his second consecutive European title. After an out in the fourth throw, he finished the game with 19.38m and 19.62m.
Germany’s Sara Gambeta, with 18.83 m, and Sweden’s Fanny Roos, with 18.42 m, took the silver and bronze medals respectively, dethroning Portugal’s Jessica Inchude, who threw the weight 18.33 m in the fourth test and took fourth place.
