Larrigana struggles to reach the semifinals of the 60m hurdles
Portugal’s Abdel Larrinaga struggled this Saturday to reach the semi-finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Track Championships in Istanbul, where he was one of the losers in the qualifications.
“It was a bit desperate to wait for the others and not depend on me. It gives me a bit of anxiety but it was worth it. I wanted direct qualifying but my run was the most even of them all, like now the case is.” proven,” he told the Sporting athlete, in the mixed zone of the Ataköy Arena.

“I trusted the race, for the semi-finals the same cannot happen, otherwise I will be out. In the morning it is difficult to run very fast and I think tomorrow [no domingo] he will run at the same pace, at 7.60 or 7.70,” he explained.
The 29-year-old Sporting hurdler set a personal best of 7.67 in 2022, and his best mark this year was 7.73, with expectations he will have to run at that pace to reach the final, which will host the European Championships. program will end on Sunday at 9:05 PM local time (6:05 PM in Lisbon).
“This match is more about trying to succeed and not looking for a record. Nobody got close to their goal and I think that will help me also because I was a decathlete and used to waking up early but this guys don’t. But there’s no excuse, there’s eight lanes and it’s the same for everyone,” he concluded.
The national record for the 60 meters hurdles is 7.66 and is shared by Rasul Dabo and João Almeida, who achieved these figures in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Olimpica Barbosa eliminated
Portugal’s Olimpia Barbosa regretted the “bittersweet taste” on Saturday when she was eliminated from the 60-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Track Championships in Istanbul.
The 28-year-old Sporting hurdler failed to qualify for the semi-finals and finished the fourth and final heat in sixth place in 8.21 seconds, making it 22nd among the participants.
“It’s a bit bittersweet because it was a very good performance, but it wasn’t enough to go through to the next stage. It was my second best grade of the season, which I had already done, before 8.16, and I think it will be a super good time”, explains Olímpia Barbosa.
The athlete has already set a personal best of 8.16 this year and needed a mark below that to continue in Istanbul2023 – the last was Finland’s Annimari Corte, with 8.14.
“In 2019 I went to Glasgow where I scored 8.40. Today was much better but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. But I’m happy because I’m pretty consistent in these results. I feel like this season was successful ” emphasized de Barreira, recalling the previous Europeans, in which he finished in 26th place.
Olímpia Barbosa took part in the fourth and final series, already under “pressure” to improve her personal best to continue in the competition.
“It’s a bit more complicated, but we all know our worth. We don’t go out on track expecting a miracle to happen, because it doesn’t. We are aware of the result we’re getting and try to vanquish.” ourselves,” she concluded.
Isabel Abrantes holds the national record in the 60 meters hurdles, with a time of 08.08 seconds, set in 2001, while the best Portuguese classification in the European indoor race was achieved by Sandra Turpin, in Valencia 1998.
