The second day of competition in the Portuguese leg of the main circuit of the World Surfing League (WSL) was marked by big and heavy waves, but also by the new attendance record at Praia de Supertubos, in Peniche.
There were 51,000 fans who filled the sand to witness an authentic show surfon a Sunday full of action and drama, with the number of people attending in Western theater reaching a new historical maximum, the organization revealed to Lusa.
The eliminations of Portugal’s Frederico Morais, North American Kelly Slater, 11-time world champion, Hawaiian John John Florence, two-time champion, or Brazilian Filipe Toledo, defending champion, were the highlights of the day, which began with spring sunshine and ended in dense fog.
The race started very early, with the second chance round, in which Kikas said goodbye with a tangential defeat to Kelly Slater, who was eliminated in the next round, leaving up the big chance of not wearing the competition lycra again in Portugal.
Even with the force of the sea forced to interrupt the competition and the fog threatening the resumption, the audience did not disarm, and rightly so, because once the boards slid again for the round of 32, the surfers show why they are the best in the world regardless of the circumstances they face.
The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the third leg of the premier WSL circuit, kicked off on Saturday, after three days of waiting for the best conditions, and will run until March 16.
