Portuguese surfer Yolanda Hopkins secured a place in the ‘quarters’ of the elite competition of the World Surfing League (WSL) at Praia de Supertubos, in Peniche, on Monday by beating Hawaiian Carissa Moore, five-time world champion.
Yolanda’s strong maneuvers earned her 11.77 points in her two best waves (6.10 and 5.67), out of 20 possible points, while her opponent, who is an Olympic champion, got 10.23 points (5.63 and 4.60).
The Portuguese Olympic athlete, who takes part in this main circuit event as a guest, advanced to the quarter-finals shortly after her compatriot Teresa Bonvalot (who also represented Portugal in Tokyo2020) was eliminated with 9.60 points (5.10 and 4.50).
Bonvalot said goodbye to the Portuguese event on the main circuit of the World Surfing League (WSL) and was eliminated in the round of 16 by Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, who won last year in Supertubos.
The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the third leg of the premier WSL circuit, kicked off on Saturday, after three days of waiting for the best conditions, and will run until March 16.
