The athletes Miguel Marques and Catarina Ribeiro, from Sporting, were proclaimed Portuguese champions of the 10,000 meters this Saturday, in an event that took place in Burjassot, Spain, in addition to the Spanish Championship and the Iberian Distance Tournament.
Miguel Marques finished the race in tenth position, with 28:52.42 minutes (personal record), which was won by the Spanish Ílias Fifa (27:59.76), and was proclaimed national champion for the first time, after being second in 2021 and third in 2020 and 2022.
Behind him came two Benfica athletes, Duarte Gomes, 13th (29:13.01 minutes), who was close to his personal best, and André Pereira, 14th (29:23.46), who surpassed his previous maximum.
Fábio Oliveira, from Guilhovai (30.26.01 minutes), and João Almeida, from Recreio de Águeda (30.26.03 minutes), also finished the race, although both did not reach a personal record. Samuel Freire abandoned.
In series B, four more Portuguese participated, being Alexandre Venâncio (Casa do Benfica de Faro) seventh, the rookie Duarte Santos (Sporting) 17th -under-23 national champion-, João Baiôa (Casa do Benfica de Reguengos de Monsaraz) 18th, and Francisco Laranjeira (GD Diana) 23.
Overall, Spain won and in the last men’s event of the program, André Barbosa, from Leixões, finished the 5,000 meters in sixth place, with a time of 14:30.01 minutes.
In the women’s race, the Spanish athletes did not give up either and reached the top seven positions, with the victory of Isabel Barreiro, with a time of 32:03.38 minutes.
The Portuguese athletes have never been in front and the first to cross the finish line was the Sporting player Catarina Ribeiro, with 33.03.10 minutes, in eighth place, thus becoming national champion for the first time in her career.
Catarina Ribeiro, who set a qualifying time for the European Cup over 10,000 meters in Pacé, France, on June 3, finished the race more than a minute ahead of second-placed Portuguese Joana Ferreira of Recreio de Águeda (09.34.12). minutes), which was 13.
Behind them, Sara Duarte (SC Braga), who was 14th (34:18.55 minutes), and Carla Martinho (RD Águeda), who finished 18th (35:00.52). Salomé Rocha did not finish the race.
In series B, Joana Nunes, also from Recreio de Águeda, was in ninth place. In the sum of the times, Spain triumphed with more than seven minutes of advantage over Portugal.
