The swimmer Diogo Ribeiro guaranteed, this Thursday, his presence in the Olympic Games next year, in Paris, after having surpassed the national record of the 50 freestyle meters.
The Benfica athlete competed this morning in the National Junior and Absolute Championships, in Madeira, where he set the best time in the qualifiers, with 21.87 seconds, surpassing the record of Miguel Nascimento (also from the Luz club), of 21.90 seconds, established in September 2022, in Oeiras.
With this time, Diogo Ribeiro also qualified for the Fukuoka World Swimming Championships, together with Andrii Govorov (Vitória de Guimarães), who reached second place, with the minimum required time of 21.98 seconds.
Miguel Nascimento, for his part, was barely out of the Olympic Games and the World Cup, after getting third place in the qualifying rounds, with a time of 21.99 seconds.
The final of the 50 meter freestyle in Madeira will still take place this Thursday starting at 5:00 p.m.
Diogo Ribeiro is 18 years old and is the current junior world champion in the 50-meter butterfly.
