The leader Arsenal wasted this Sunday a two-goal advantage and a penalty in the draw (2-2) against West Ham, a result that paves the way for Manchester City’s new approach to the English Football League.
In one of the oldest derbies in London, the Gunners added the second game in a row without winning and will finish matchday 31 with a four-point lead over Manchester City, second, although the two-time English champion has played one game less. On this day they received and beat Leicester City, 3-1.
This means that, if Pep Guardiola’s men take advantage of the opportunity, Arsenal and the ‘citizens’ will reach the final stretch of the Premier League separated by a single point.
In the English capital, Arsenal was already leading 2-0 after 10 minutes, with goals from the Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, after seven, and the Norwegian Martin Odegaard, but, before the break, at 33, West Ham was still reduced by the Algerian Said Benrahma, in the marking of a penalty.
In the second half, the ‘Gunners’ experienced three ‘nightmare’ minutes, which could have conditioned the season, first with Saka, recalling the final of the last Euro Cup, missing a penalty, in minute 52, and with Bowen restoring equality, and fix the final result, at 55.
In the fight for maintenance, West Ham ‘thanks’ the tie and now has 31 points in 15th place, four above the relegation zone.
Portuguese midfielder Fábio Vieira started the game on Arsenal’s substitute bench, having been loaned out by Mikel Arteta in the last five minutes of the game.
