From the heart of Lisbon (Palácio Foz, in Restauradores) to the heart of Jamor? The National Sports Museum has been closed for works since December, but could soon get a new building. “The Office of the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports and the Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth, together with the municipality of Oeiras, are studying a permanent solution that involves the construction of a new building on the Alto da Boa Viagem site,” the office of João Paulo Correia told DN.
In other words, in the Sports Complex of Jamor (Oeiras)… a few meters from the National Stadium, the Complexo das Piscinas, where the pole of the Interpretive Center of Jamor already exists, and the Moniz Pereira athletics area. Cidade do Futebol is just over a kilometer away, but is separated by a fast road with no pedestrian access.
Everything will depend on the location, but building a new space in the 230 hectares of Jamor must be said. In addition to the fact that the Liga dos Amigos do Jamor has resorted to court several times to prevent construction work in Vale do Jamor, the area may soon be classified as a national heritage – since 2019 it has been waiting for a decision from the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage – and, if so, the subject of scrutiny.
For now, the studied idea is to build a museum from scratch in Alto da Boa Viagem. Those responsible for the IPDJ, the entity supervising the museum, have long thought about a solution that includes Jamor and have even joined forces in this regard with the Oeiras City Council, trying to bring back the so-called Casa EDP to get. which has been empty for years – but since 2017 EDP has refused to sell the property, according to the municipality.
Inaugurated in Palácio Foz on July 12, 2012, the year Portugal celebrated 100 years of participation in the Olympic Games (Stockholm 1912)the National Sports Museum, which housed the National Sports Library, made available to the public an important collection on the history of sports in Portugal.
It was closed for works in December due to bad weather that hit Lisbon and led to the collapse of part of the roof of the palace. It was therefore necessary to remove the collection from the space, but the Museum had already indicated for at least two years that it would leave the building in the Restauradores neighbourhood.
With the departure completed and work underway on a final solution that will improve the estate, the IPDJ has launched the Museu Fora de Portas itinerant program, which will bring the various thematic exhibitions to the national territory. Starting with Viana do Castelo – European city of sports.
The Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo hosts from March 30 to May 31 and with free admission the following exhibitions: 10 years National Sports Museum 2012-2022; Jam. The main stage of national sports; Tennis in Portugal from 1875 to 2019; Moniz Pereira. The coach and the athletes; Posters from the Olympic Games and women in the sports press.
The museum manages the entire collection of Moniz Pereira’s exhibitions after donations from the family, namely from daughter Leonor. Senhor Atletismo had a room just for him, which will be moved to a space open to the public, on the edge of the Centro Desportivo Nacional do Jamor.
Estate with more than 50 thousand objects
From a drawing of King D. Carlos with a tennis racket to a commemorative medal for the biggest defeat of the national football team. From the wooden skates of Prince Luís Filipe de Bragança (19th century) to the boots of Cristiano Ronaldo, through a signature of Jesse Owens – the black athlete who humiliated Hitler by winning four gold medals in Munich 1948 -, the collection of the National Museum of Sport is huge – over 50,000 objects – and rich in history.
Cristiano Ronaldo boots, Luís Figo and Fernando Peyroteo’s jerseys, as well as a jersey worn by Hélder Postiga at Euro 2004 and a ball signed by all the players of the national team who lost the European final against Greece, are part of the museum’s relics.
The sneakers with which Nélson Évora won the triple jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics are one of the gems in the museum, which also has Fernanda Ribeiro sneakers. There is also a list of the shirt Rosa Mota wore in Los Angeles 1984 to win the bronze medal – the first by a Portuguese athlete in an Olympic Games. The suit that judoka Telma Monteiro wore in London 2012 and the equipment of triathlete Vanessa Fernandes, silver in Beijing 2008, are also part of the collection.
A biographical exhibition of Moniz Pereira, with photographs, cinema and theater tickets, medals and trophies, scores and objects testifying to more than 90 years of a life devoted to sports, mainly athletics and sports. They were donated by the family.
The National Sports Library is one of the museum’s ex-libris. Among thousands of books and monographs, videos and audio carriers, one is considered to be the first sports book in the world – De Arte Gymnastica, by Hieronymus Mercurialis – published in 1577.
The start of the Tour of Portugal by bike is documented. Rui Costa’s rainbow jersey, at the World Cycling Championships on the road (2013) or the Grand-Bi, forerunner of the bicycle, are among the cycling items.
