Coach Rúben Amorim assumed on Sunday that he “outright” failed to achieve the goals of the 2022/23 football season and that he will eventually evaluate what is best for Sporting, but without confirming his intention to leave the club.
At a press conference in Alcochete, the coach clarified that “what he wanted to do” at the end of the meeting with Juventus, on Thursday, was “taking responsibility” and said that “the minimum objectives” were not achieved, moreover that such an assessment “at the end of the season” will be made.
“I’m responsible for the sporting part and we’ve failed so far. We’re failing miserably. And that’s why we need to speak up as a club. I need to talk to people, give my explanations and take my responsibility. Ultimately, we’ll see what’s best is for the club. Nothing more than that.”clarified Rúben Amorim.
Earlier, the coach emphasized that “this does not change the coach’s wish to stay or [significa] who has changed his mind and wants to leave”, recalling that as Sporting’s “sports project man” he would not feel good if he did not take up his responsibilities to the board at the end of the season.
“I can’t escape it, I wouldn’t feel good and I’d even be a little embarrassed if I didn’t have this conversation with the board and with the president. It’s just that, no dramas at all, as in all companies that targets,” he said.
Still true to his words after the elimination he suffered against the Italians, in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Amorim maintained “what he said about the striker”, remembering that Liedson, Derlei and Slimani did not win any championship for Sporting . , unlike Paulinho and Tiago Tomás.
“I support what I said about the striker. That could of course be one of the factors for the lack of effectiveness, but that does not mean that it is the main reason for the failure of our objectives and, in that respect, I stand by [o que disse]”insisted.
The coach spoke during the press conference about the possible departure of Sporting at the end of the season ahead of the visit to Vitória de Guimarães, which counts for the 29th round of the 1st Football League.
On Thursday, after the 1-1 draw with Juventus, at Estádio José Alvalade, the coach stated that Sporting will probably not reach the “minimum goals” for this season and that it is therefore “difficult” to maintain continuity in the club.
