UEFA and the European Space Agency team up to “follow” the crowd

UEFA and the European Space Agency (ESA) today informed the association of an unprecedented partnership to improve crowd management, the presence of pitches in local life and the environmental impact of football.

The agreement established until the end of 2025 will allow the introduction of “spatial innovation in professional football competitions”, the two organizations reported in a statement, after a meeting held this Monday in Lausanne.

The use of satellite data will help with “crowd monitoring from space”, identifying “bottlenecks around” sports venues.

UEFA will have access to existing ‘history’ for specific locations and communications satellites can support communications on the ground, which is often overwhelmed when large crowds gather.

According to the statement, this agreement could also help UEFA to “identify the benefits that a football stadium brings to local communities”, combining satellite information with socio-economic, meteorological and health data.
