Formula 1 will have six ‘sprint’ races from 2023

The Formula 1 calendar will include six races sprint from 2023 double the current, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided, although the main prizes they will receive are unknown.

“I am pleased to confirm that six sprint races will be part of the championship from 2023, building on the success of the new format first introduced in 2021,” said Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

On the relevant weekends, qualifying will be moved forward one day to Friday, with a race taking place, sprintextra on Saturday, of 100 kilometers, which determines the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

“O sprint offers action over three days with each rider fighting for something from the Friday start to the main event on Sunday, making the weekend even more exciting. O feedback from fans, teams, promoters and partners has been very positive and the format brings a new dimension to Formula 1. And we all want to ensure its success in the future,” the manager added.

Silverstone, in the UK, Monza, in Italy, and Interlagos, in Brazil, hosted the first three events sprint, in 2021, while Imola (Italy), Red Bull Ring (Austria) and again Interlagos were designated to host those races in the current campaign.

“This is another example of the continued growth and prosperity of motorsport.. In close collaboration with Stefano Domenicali and the FOM [Formula One Management Group]we have made a thorough analysis of the impact of extra sessions of sprint and we have adjusted relevant parameters of our work to ensure they remain regulated at the highest level,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
