A 15-year-old German footballer died on Wednesday after suffering brain injuries on Sunday in a match in an international tournament with the French from Metz, and after clashes between players from the two teams, on the pitch of SV Viktoria Preussen 07, in Frankfurt.
“After Sunday’s clashes (…) the 15-year-old teenager died in hospital from serious brain injuries,” German police reported today. by means of a statement.
Initially, the information from various local press media from Frankfurt, Germany realized that the player was brain dead due to blows to the head and neck.
The player, from the JFC Berlin team, was unconscious and had to be revived. He was taken to hospital, where he was soon diagnosed as brain dead.
The alleged aggressor, from the French team, was questioned by authorities, although Metz clarified on Monday that he said there was no intent to cause damage.
The 16-year-old is in custody, Frankfurt police added, as the investigation into the events continues and he awaits the result of the autopsy, which will be carried out in the coming days.
Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Nadja Niesen explained that the deceased teenager has been kept on artificial life support until today so that his organs can be donated.
