Today, in an unprecedented final, at Wembley, it was impossible for citizens better start. A spectacular goal from Ilkay Gundogan in the 13 seconds of the game gave Pep Guardiola’s team the lead. It was the fastest goal in the league’s history. Manchester United equalized in the 33rd minute through a penalty scored by Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese was captain of the Red Devilsbut he wasn’t the one who lifted the trophy… thanks to Gundogan, who doubled in the 51st minute after a pass from De Bruyne.
A few days ago, Guardiola called Gundogan a silent leader and yesterday he did not forget the contribution of the German genius in his conquests. The Spanish coach was moved by winning yet another trophy and cried as he hugged the hero of the afternoon… who is reportedly leaving for Barcelona.
In the last six games he has scored six goals, including two against Leeds (2-1), in the game that would eventually win the title (with the help of Arsenal’s defeat) and two in today’s FA Cup final, in the triumph over the rival from Manchester (2-1). And he had already scored the goals (3-2, against Aston Villa) that had won the 2021-22 Premier League.
Manchester City thus won the seventh FA Cup in history and are looking for the unprecedented treble – they play the Champions League final on the 10th, in Istanbul, with Inter. Rivals United were the only one to achieve the treble in one season, in 1999, with Alex Ferguson.
For the Portuguese, it is Bernardo Silva’s 13th trophy for Manchester City, who he has represented since 2027-2018, while Rúben Dias has five since the 2020-21 season.
