It’s an indicator that you don’t win matches, but it says a lot about the difference in budget between the two Champions League finalists tonight. Manchester City’s squad is worth nearly twice as much as Inter Milan, according to the transfermarkt website, specialized in the football market. The players of the England emblem are collectively worth €1.05 billion; the Italians at 534.45 million.
Manchester City, it should be noted, has the most valuable squad in the world (it is followed by Chelsea and Bayern Munich), while the Milanese are only 14th in this arrangementbehind, for example, rivals from the same city, AC Milan.
The most valuable player on the field tonight will be Norwegian giant Erling Haaland, valued at €170 million, a striker who has broken all goalscoring records this season, with 52 goals in 52 games (12 in the Champions League and 36 in the premier league). And that is a real headache for opposing defenders and goalkeepers.
On the Italian side, the player with the most valuable status is world champion Lautaro Martínez, 25 years old, who according to the transfer market has a market value of 80 million euros. The South American striker has been the team’s top scorer this season with 28 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions.
Next on City’s list is England international Phil Foden (110M) and a trio worth €80m each – Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne, Portugal’s Bernardo Silva and Spain’s Rodri. The other Portuguese in the selection, central Rúben Dias, has a market value of 75 million. At Inter, the top 5 most valuable is complete with Nicolò Barella (70M), Milan Skriniar (60M), Alessandro Bastoni (55M) and striker Romelu Lukaku (40M).
Both Manchester City and Inter Milan are owned by Asian magnates. In the case of City, the owner is Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the royal family, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and a member of the Supreme Petroleum Council. Inter Milan is owned by the Chinese Steven Zhang, heir to the Suning group, specializing in the retail of household appliances.
But the difference in investment in one club and the other is brutal. City, to give you an idea, spent over €1bn on reinforcements in the Pep Guardiola era (since 2016). Inter, on the other hand, is a club that is spared in terms of acquisitions. This season, for example, they only spent 37.4 million euros. And in the previous one they did not exceed 43 million. News recently came out that the Chinese group was interested in selling its stake.
