It is one of the figures of artificial intelligence. Yann Le Cun, head of AI at Meta, traveled to Paris this Wednesday to participate in a round table at the Vivatech fair. The opportunity for him to bring a bit of serenity to this subject that impresses as much as it worries.
However, he assures that the potential of AI is enormous: “There is no doubt that AI smarter than humans will eventually arrive,” explains Yann Le Cun. “Currently, AIs can outperform humans in some areas, but those are tight areas.”
The best example according to him: some programs can certainly pass the bar exam, but autonomous driving is still far from a reality.
“Obey the Humans”
“Therefore, we are missing something very important,” he continues, recalling that the language models were ultimately quite limited. “Most of human knowledge bypasses language. Otherwise, one could become a surgeon or a mechanic simply by reading books.”
It remains to be seen what will become of the AIs when they have finally passed this stage of learning.
Arguing relentlessly against the “smart” of future AIs: “There’s no correlation between ‘being smart’ and ‘taking over the world’, we see it in politics, it’s not necessarily the smartest people who take over.”
