Sony tries to get into cloud gaming for PS5 games, but with many limitations

On the occasion of the celebrations organized by the first anniversary of PlayStation Plus, Sony announced the future possibility of playing PS5 games in cloud games. But it will not be without difficulty.

Xbox has long taken the path of cloud gaming – the ability to play remotely on your smartphone, tablet or PC without having your console to hand – with its Xbox Cloud Gaming service integrated into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. However, Sony has been investing in the sector for even longer by buying Gaikai, a Californian startup specializing in cloud gaming in 2012. But since then, nothing or almost nothing.

The PlayStation Now service once offered the possibility of streaming certain old titles (PS3 and PS4), but it has disappeared drowned in the new PlayStation Plus subscription that celebrates its first anniversary this month. This one offers a few games to try on cloud gaming, but it’s only good if you subscribe to the more expensive Premium tier and for older titles.

On Wednesday, PlayStation announced 10 days of festivities to accompany this anniversary (June 20-30), with the addition of new games to the catalog, but also operations (codes for personalized avatars in the colors of the game, wallpaper for PC or smartphone, console to win, etc.), and also free weekends to play online multiplayer without a subscription (June 24-25). But the most exciting news was probably the ability to play these PS5 games on cloud gaming soon.

Not a PS Cloud Game Yet

However, do not imagine yourself playing God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7 EITHER the last of us part 1 from wherever. If the idea is beautiful, the restrictions are still numerous. Starting with the fact that you have to be a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber to enjoy it. Also, not all PS5 games will be supported. These are simply the contents in the PlayStation Plus catalog and accessible only if you are a Premium subscriber.

Suffice it to say that the latest exclusives are not part of the offer. On the other hand, the game demos on offer can be played remotely. However, you can add to this the PS5 games you own digitally on your console, “if they’re compatible.”

Another restriction announced: when the feature launches, it will only be possible to play “in the cloud” from your console. That means, first and foremost, it’s about streaming games. You will not be able to access it from a smartphone or PC from the PS Remote app. In addition to PS4 and PS5, though, PS Plus Premium subscribers can currently stream PS Classics, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games on their PC, without having a console available.

Sony hasn’t announced a release date, saying it’s testing the feature for now. It only remains to hope that this will also serve to refine the existing offer. In fact, it was impossible to start a game on your console using the downloaded game, continue streaming, and then return to the console. No backup was made. Unless it is a new stage for the portable console recently announced by Sony and that will have to be taken advantage of to play away from your console…
