The European Commission wants a label to identify sustainable smartphones

On June 16, the European Commission proposed new labeling for smartphones and tablets to guide consumers towards more sustainable devices.

You may be familiar with the electronic device repairability index introduced in France in 2021. For its part, the European Commission is proposing new labeling for smartphones and tablets. Objective: to give various indications about the durability of a device.

Very specifically, according to the Commission’s proposal, several criteria will appear on this labeling: energy efficiency, battery life, impermeability, dust tightness, resistance to falls and the degree of repairability.

However, an important criterion for whether a particular phone can last a long time is not maintained: its ability to support software updates for a long period of time. If a phone can’t guarantee many software updates, its durability may suffer: it won’t be able to support all the new features.

This new labeling will take the form of a color code ranging from green to red with seven different levels ranging from A to G.

“More sustainable” options

In France, the repairability index, which is presented in the form of a score and color, allows us to know how easily a device can be repaired.

This proposal will be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council during a review period of two months. Then it can be adopted, if there are no objections. Before a 21-month transition period, to give manufacturers time to adjust.
