United States: an AirTag allows a Mexican restaurant to find its giant bull mascot

The manager of the establishment had taken the initiative to slip the accessory to the pet who was spending the night outside.

“It was kidnapped”. With the San Antonio Express-News, the manager of the restaurant Don Manolito Tacos (San Antonio, Texas, United States) tells how an AirTag, Apple’s connected beacon, allowed him to find Manolo, the mascot of the establishment. Specifically, it is a bull statue of 1.80 m, for 70 kg, made in Mexico.

immediately located

Chained to a bench sealed to the ground in front of the restaurant, the beast seemed safe. But he disappeared on the night of Monday June 12 to Tuesday June 13. It was when they arrived at work that the employees found that the mascot had disappeared and the channel was cut, taking the initiative to post a witness call on Instagram.

As David Barquet, the boss of Tacos Don Manolito, explained to the local newspaper, he had the good idea to slip an AirTag into the statue. Offered by Apple, the accessory allows you to locate any object to which it is connected, for example keys, from your iPhone.

Within minutes, the restaurant team was able to locate the beast, in a house in the Southtown district, some thirty kilometers away. The police eventually recovered the statue from people who claimed to have bought it from someone. A version that should be compared with CCTV images.

While Apple’s AirTags allow many users to find their personal belongings (or their car), these products are sometimes criticized for the eavesdropping risk, especially of women, that they entail.
