Facebook implements “parental supervision” in Messenger

The various tools will be available in France in the coming months.

The operation is called “parental supervision.” A Facebook initiative that aims to monitor your teen’s activities on social media without being intrusive. Against this backdrop, Facebook is rolling out new tools similar to parental controls on Messenger and Instagram, Meta (Facebook’s parent company) said on June 27.

This “parental supervision” takes various forms and these tools are operational when the parents and the adolescent mutually agree to activate them.

Thus, parents will be able to see how much time their children spend on Messenger, view the list of common subscribers between their teen’s account and those they follow, receive notifications if the teen reports a user, see who can send a message to their teenage son or watch Stories Messenger.

Please note that parents do not have access to their children’s private messages. These parental monitoring tools have already been implemented on Instagram since last year. New on Instagram is now the ability to see the common follower list between your teens’ account and those they follow.

Manage screen time

Meta also wants to help teens manage their screen time. Just like on Instagram, the “Take a break” feature will be available on Facebook. Notifications can appear inviting the user to take a break and this tool gives the possibility of setting daily time limits beyond 20 minutes spent in the application.

All these tools are currently deployed in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. They will be available in other countries such as France in the “coming months”.

On the other hand, on Instagram, a tool that is currently being tested will be rolled out to French users in the coming weeks. “Silent Mode” helps users set limits on their app usage. When a user activates it, they no longer receive notifications, their status changes to offline, and an automatic reply is sent to the sender of a message indicating that they are not available.
