A quote that follows the arrest of Emmanuel Macron, evoking “the considerable role” of the two social networks in the events of the last hours.
At the whim of the platforms
This meeting should also be an opportunity for the authorities to ask Snapchat and TikTok (which is based in the UK as far as its French users are concerned) to remove certain “sensitive” content. A request that could be the subject of negotiation, without foreign companies having the obligation to respond favorably to French judicial requirements.
Since the night of June 28, TikTok and Snapchat have been particularly used by rioters, often with a very young profile, to broadcast videos, live or recorded, in which they appear. Sequences that can show a confrontation between rioters and police, but also a lot of looting.
On TikTok, most of the most “liked” sequences about the riots take on an ironic tone, while on Snapchat, the Snap Map tool allows you to geolocate in real time the places where clashes are increasing.
With Tech & Co, Snapchat is making sure to closely monitor the situation, with a “proactive” examination of content posted on Snap Map since the start of the riots. For its part, TikTok assures that it is attentive to the application of its “Community Rules”.
