TikTok users spent two billion dollars there in six months, a record

According to Data.ai, TikTok users spent more than $2.1 billion on purchases on the platform in the first half of 2023. Significant growth that also affects Disney+ and YouTube.

Almost 15 million monthly active users in France, almost 1.1 billion worldwide: TikTok continues its incredible growth. And the social network rubs shoulders with other emblematic applications, which continue to reap the large sums spent by their users.

In the first half of 2023, mobile spending reached $67.5 billion worldwide. A jump of 5.3% in one year, after a drop in 2022. This is also due to the increase in application downloads of 3.2% on iOS and Android (76.8 billion), indicates a study by Data .have. On the other hand, in-app purchases held pretty steady.

Downloads are on the rise

As is often the case, it’s iOS consumers who outspend Google Play Store consumers, bringing in $43.5 billion, compared to $24 billion in the first half of 2023 on Android. But with a much larger global base, Android smartphones and tablets still account for three times as many downloads as iPhones and iPads, even if the latter have seen a larger increase (+10%).

According to data.ai, 65% of total cumulative spend is on the App Store. In the expense lists are games, entertainment and social networks. And at the top of the ranking we find TikTok, which grows 31% in one year. The social network had already been the first app to surpass $1 billion in consumer spending in a quarter in early 2023.

The platform continued its momentum to reach $2.1 billion in half a year (+24% compared to its record $1.7 billion in the second half of 2022). Piccoma, Disney+ and YouTube also experienced strong growth. Tinder still struts around in third place for spending.

In the world ranking of the most downloaded applications, TiktTok displaces Instagram in the first half of 2023 and is ahead of the Meta trio, also made up of Facebook (3rd) and WhatsApp (4th).
