More than 200 suspicious links identified in Threads in 24 hours

In just 24 hours, more than 200 suspicious ‘links’ were detected on Threads, including possible scams aimed at deceiving followers of the new social network and fraudulent messages to steal usernames and passwords, experts warned Thursday.

In a statement, cybersecurity company Kaspersky said it has discovered several tactics scammers use to exploit users of the app, including phishing pages, which pose as a version of the app, with the goal of have unauthorized access to your accounts. , personal data or finances.

Meta’s new app is raising privacy concerns for its users, which has led to its not being available in the European Union.

Threads can collect a wide range of personal information, including health, finances, contacts, social media browsing and search history, location, purchases, and “sensitive information.”

Among the possible scams detected in Latin America, there is one that offers salaries of 2,000 dollars (about 1,781 euros) on average for people to ‘like’ and comment on posts on the new social network, but for this the victims must acquire a certain application. of 30 dollars.

Another scam involves ‘phishing’ pages that mimic a non-existent version of the Threads web page to trick users into entering their login details.

As Threads is linked to other Meta services, users risk losing access to accounts on other social networks such as Instagram and Facebook.

According to experts, “this situation not only raises privacy concerns such as identity theft and ‘doxing’ [revelar as informações de uma pessoa]But more worrisome is that it carries financial risks.”

“This scam can also affect companies, since there are currently many companies that use these accounts to create advertising campaigns,” they warn.

Just a few hours after its launch last week, Threads managed to add more than 100 million users and thus become attractive to “online scams”, experts noted.

“Latin America has a high consumption of social networks, so it is natural that scams arise. Criminals are not recognized for their ethics, so they use any artifice to achieve their goal and the most common is monetization, that is, stealing from the victims”, stressed Fábio Assolini, director of Kaspersky’s global research and analysis team for Latin America.

Assolini also emphasized that “these fake offers use the name and fashion of the social network to reach the largest number of victims.”

“Whoever falls for the hook will lose their money and will not receive any compensation,” he concluded.

A message on Threads can be up to 500 characters, compared to Twitter’s 280, and include links, photos and videos up to five minutes long.
