Something new from Sony. The Japanese manufacturer announced, in a press release published this Wednesday, August 23, the next launch of Playstation Portal. Briefly presented last May under the pseudonym Project Q, this accessory, halfway between the DualSense controller and the game console, allows you to remotely play games installed on the PlayStation 5 in your home.
Home Alone (and No Bluetooth Headphones)
PlayStation Portal is not a portable console, contrary to what its resemblance to Nintendo Switch might suggest. It’s billed as a variation of the PlayStation 5’s Remote Play functionality. With one big difference: PlayStation Portal only works if you’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the console.
That is to say, it is made to play it when the television is already removed, for example from the bed… or in the bathrooms. In fact, it is a screen that displays the content of your PS5, surrounded by a DualSense controller.
Another size limit: it will not be possible to play at the same time on PlayStation Portal and PlayStation 5. Finally, the device lacks a Bluetooth connection. Therefore, it will be impossible to connect wireless headphones to it. Only PlayStation headsets will be able to work without a physical link, thanks to a proprietary link called “PlayStation Link.”
Sony’s remote playback device incorporates key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. The device also offers an eight-inch LCD panel with a speed of 60 frames per second capable of offering a definition of 1080p. According to Sony’s press release, the PlayStation Portal will be launched at the end of the year from 219.99 euros.
