After seven years of existence, Meta marks the end of Messenger Lite. This lite version of Messenger was designed for less powerful Android devices. The application has been removed from the Google Play Store for new users and will no longer be available as of September 18 for current users, reveals the specialized medium. TechnologyCrunch.
Created in 2016, the Messenger Lite app offers only the basic Messenger functionalities to monopolize as little storage space as possible and consumes much less resources than the classic Messenger app. On iOS, Messenger Lite was deprecated in 2020.
Change of strategy for Facebook
Users who are still active are notified with an in-app message asking them to switch to Messenger or Facebook Lite to send and receive messages.
This announcement comes as Meta recently announced that Messenger will stop supporting SMS in a month’s time. Facebook has informed users that if they use Messenger as their default messaging app to send text messages on an Android device, they will no longer be able to use Messenger to send and receive text messages sent over their mobile network. This will happen with app updates after September 28.
