How to limit your environmental impact while enjoying your movies and series streaming? The Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority (Arcom) could help consumers change their habits. The organization is preparing to reveal a list of measures to adopt more ecological actions when using streaming services, such as Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video.
L’Informed was able to obtain their recommendations. Thus, the audiovisual and internet police want the platforms to provide a function of “energy sobriety.” With this option, viewers could automatically reduce the image quality and prevent autoplay. Two aspects that allow limiting data exchange and, therefore, the environmental impact.
A “visible and reported” option
Arcom considers that the implementation of this configuration should be “easily accessible.” This means that the user could activate it with just one or two clicks. Likewise, the organization indicates that the existence of said option should be “clearly visible and indicated” by the services.
Among other recommendations, Arcom suggests turning off various terminals and digital equipment when not in use. Another tip from the organization to reduce its impact is to favor access to content from fixed networks rather than from mobile networks to access the content displayed.
Finally, the regulator wants the different audiovisual services, from television to platforms, to agree on a common methodology to calculate the environmental impact of their use. Arcom also requests a summary of the actions carried out within the framework of these recommendations.
