Sales of the iPhone 12 were suspended this Tuesday in France after the body that regulates radio frequencies in the country, ANFR, detected that this smartphone model emits too much electromagnetic radiation that can be absorbed by the human body.
The recall is effective September 12 and is based on the detection, by accredited laboratories, of an absorption of electromagnetic energy by the body of 5.74 watts per kilogram when the cell phone is in the hand or in the user’s pocket. The maximum European standard is 4.0 watts per kilogram.
“With respect to devices already sold, Apple must take corrective measures as soon as possible to allow the affected phones to comply” with the standards, the ANFR said in a statement.
The same authority details, however, that the values obtained in tests in which the electromagnetic radiation absorbed at a distance of five centimeters is measured met the limit of 2.0 watts per kilogram.
In an interview with Le Parisien, French Digital Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot explained that correcting this situation “only requires a simple update of the operating system” and that Apple has 15 days to do so.
Contacted by Agence France-Presse, Apple disputed the results mentioned by ANFR, stating that it presented several independent analyzes showing that the devices were compliant. Even so, he pledged to continue working with the regulator.
