The North American space agency (NASA) announced on Thursday the creation of a department to study unidentified anomalous phenomena, considering that they are not being studied adequately.
According to a NASA report published Thursday, studying these phenomena requires new scientific techniques, including advanced satellites, as well as a change in the way we observe them.
“We will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to look for anomalies in the skies and we will continue to search for habitability” on other worlds, NASA administrator Bill Nelson said at a press conference.
NASA defines unidentified anomalous phenomena (a term that favors UFOs – Unidentified Flying Object) as phenomena observed in the sky that cannot be identified as airplanes, balloons or natural phenomena already known from a scientific point of view.
According to NASA, although there are numerous eyewitness reports and images associated with the unidentified anomalous phenomena, they are not consistent or detailed enough to draw definitive scientific conclusions about their nature and origin.
The report recommends that NASA play “a leading role” in the effort to understand these phenomena, “taking advantage of its extensive experience,” and highlights that “currently the detection of unidentified anomalous phenomena tends to be chaotic, with sensors that were not designed nor calibrated for this purpose”.
On the other hand, negative perceptions about UFOs pose obstacles to data collection, says the report, prepared by an independent team of scientists and experts in aviation and artificial intelligence using publicly available data.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson insisted that the agency “has no evidence” that these phenomena “have an extraterrestrial origin” and promised that the agency “will transparently share with the entire world” the data it collects.
