A large pink veil against the black sky. Several people have testified on social networks or on specialized sites about their observation of the northern lights in the French sky, during the night from Sunday to Monday.
The most impressive image was captured in Burgundy, in the town of Val-Suzon (Côte d’Or), by a weather enthusiast who explains on the Infoclimat website that the northern lights appeared shortly before 1 in the morning. He also indicates that he already observed one last week.

“The spectacle was as stealthy as it was incredible, with an intense red aurora very clearly visible to the naked eye over the northern horizon,” he says.
“I was admiring the Milky Way at the zenith while waiting for a possible appearance of auroras, and I jumped like a gazelle when I saw this red suddenly light up the north! This only lasted 5 minutes, it was necessary so be prepared not to. lose!”, says the Internet user again.
Increase in northern lights in 2023
The phenomenon was also visible, apparently with less intensity, from the High Alps, according to independent meteorologist Paul Marquis, who reports in (formerly Twitter) images from two webcams aimed at the skies of Serre-Ponçon and Vars.
According to him, this phenomenon is related to a solar flare that occurred about 48 hours ago and, in general, to a “really active” solar cycle. [qui] It will remain like this for several more months.”
A similar observation was also made by the webcam located on the Col du Galibier, which is located at the crossroads of the Hautes-Alpes and Savoie departments. The sky that is observed is the one located to the north of the pass, that is, the Savoy sky. The observation was noted on day
In 2023, an unusually high number of northern lights were observed in the French sky, especially in February, April and July. In May, astrophysicist Eric Lagadec explained in an interview with the specialized magazine Science and future that the multiplication of these phenomena is related to the fact that the solar cycle, which lasts about 11 years, will reach its next peak of activity in 2025. The northern lights could therefore multiply in the skies of France by then.
