Will this be the last chance conference for the Meta group? Amid the turmoil after numerous controversies, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, will try this afternoon to revive the machine. And for that, only one solution: virtual reality.
A conference dedicated to the metaverse
Meta states on its website that this new conference “will discover how the metaverse can be added to physical experiences to help us connect in more intense and meaningful ways.” One way to indicate that the new obsession of the Meta teams (and especially of Mark Zuckerberg) is precisely virtual reality.
However, the beginnings of this virtual world are dangerous. Often criticized, even by their employees, with avatars with elemental graphics, Facebook and Horizon Worlds (the name of Meta’s VR universe) want to turn the page and establish themselves in the world of virtual reality. The Meta Connect conference will thus be an opportunity to present the innovations planned to achieve this goal.
new VR headset
Mark Zuckerberg has been talking about it for several months and partially revealed it in a Facebook post: the arrival of his new headset dedicated to virtual reality. Known as Project Cambria but more importantly Meta Quest Pro, this headset will give users high-definition displays for all eyes.
Above all, it will be the essential gadget to navigate the metaverse, with a device that will allow you to capture facial expressions and reproduce them on your avatar. However, the use of this headset should not be aimed at professionals, unlike the first version, which is more intended for gaming and entertainment. The device should be around 800 euros, far from the prices of Meta Quest 2, available today at 450 euros.
A decisive encounter?
This Meta conference promises to be decisive for Mark Zuckerberg’s group. Last July, during its Q2 2022 report, the company posted dismal results. In one year, the Meta group posted a $1 billion drop in revenue and a 36% decline in net profit in one year. Another significant figure: 2 million users left Facebook between the first and second quarters of 2022.
Therefore, the goal is simple for Mark Zuckerberg: to find an audience and users won over by the new features that will be announced tonight. But the challenge remains daunting. According to a recent IFOP survey for Talan, only 15% of French people would accept their Facebook account being associated with digital profiles in virtual worlds. Not to mention the mistrust of the population regarding the metaverse: 75% of the French declare to have fears regarding these new digital worlds.
