It is an auction that will undoubtedly mark the history of video games. Video Game History Foundation creator Frank Cifaldi announced the good news via tweet: “There are currently TWO unreleased, one-of-a-kind, never-digitized games for the original NES on eBay. This has literally never happened before.” A great madness, according to the rarity of the two objects found.
Games that could have become a cult
The first game released, Napoleon’s battlefields, never made it to market, but was at such a high stage of development that the auction lot included all the packaging and files that needed to be sent to Nintendo for printing. This means that, in theory, a digital version of the wargame could be created. The eBay description also states that the game was found in a trash can in 1998.
The second find is a demo of a game that had been planned for the Power Glove, an NES accessory that had been a total failure when it was released in 1989. This mechanical glove at the time allowed movements such as jumping, shooting or driving, Style Wii remote.
Sold for $100, the Power Glove failed to find its audience, particularly due to the few games intended to be used with the glove. This game, which has no name, turns out to be both an antique and, above all, a rare commodity, since only five games have been created to accompany this Power Glove.
A sale of several thousand euros
For a few days now, Frank Cifaldi has been asking for donations on Twitter to win the auction and ensure that these two treasures are recovered for his foundation. Treasures that would otherwise be kept secret by former game developers and designers. The curator did not mention the amount expected at the end of the auction. However, he imagines that the sale will reach several thousand euros.
The auction will last a total of ten days and will end on Monday, October 17. So far, eleven potential buyers have opted for the lot. The highest bid is currently $5,700, while the initial bid was $2,000. Impossible to know the identity of the eventual winner, eBay anonymizing all participants. However, Frank Cifaldi announced that he would share the news if he became the lucky winner.
